A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. Charles E. Johnson; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. Charles E. Johnson on October 28, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was born on March 17, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a beloved son of Helen and Eugene Johnson; and

WHEREAS, educated in the Philadelphia public school system, Mr. Johnson attended the Philadelphia College of Bible and was ordained into the Baptist ministry; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was a successful and savvy businessman, working as an entrepreneur, marketing consultant, and on several political campaigns; and

WHEREAS, fondly known as the "Mayor of Sweet Auburn District," Mr. Johnson was instrumental in restoring and attracting new business to the Sweet Auburn community of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson founded the Spirit of Sweet Auburn, served as president of the Sweet Auburn Business and Improvement Association, and was executive producer of the Sweet Auburn Springfest, a festival which captures an audience of over 350,000 annually; and

WHEREAS, a devoted community advocate, Mr. Johnson was a member of the Concerned Black Clergy, was active on the board of the Butler Street YMCA, was passionate about the Hungry Club, and earned numerous awards from organizations such as Rainbow Push, YMCA, SCLC, Old Fourth Ward, and Liberty Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson leaves behind many who will cherish his memory, including his children, Deborah, Michael, and Deneen; his stepson, Khalil; his ten grandchildren; and his great-grandson; and

WHEREAS, he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Johnson will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal father, grandfather, brother, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. Charles E. Johnson and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Charles E. Johnson.
