A RESOLUTION


Commending the Honorable Georganna Sinkfield and inviting her to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Georganna Sinkfield has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that she has played in leadership and her deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, she is a respected and highly regarded former member of the Georgia General Assembly and is the longest serving woman in the history of the General Assembly, with 28 years of service as a voice for Georgians; and

WHEREAS, she was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1982 to represent the people of Atlanta and Fulton County and authored legislation which created the Office of the Child Advocate; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sinkfield's leadership and guidance were instrumental as chairperson of the Committee on Children and Youth for 14 years and chairperson of the subcommittee of Appropriations on Human Development; and

WHEREAS, one of Georgia Trend magazine's 100 Most Influential People in Georgia, Representative Sinkfield was the first female elected as chairperson of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, and she served as chairperson of several major committees on the National Conference of State Legislators; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sinkfield was recognized by the Georgia Gerontology Society with a Legislative Award for her consistent support of aging issues that benefit older Georgians, and she received the American Association of Retired Persons Legislative Award for her determination and commitment to fighting predatory lending; and

WHEREAS, she has been recognized with numerous honors and accolades, including a Trumpet Award, a SCLC Drum Major for Justice Award in Government, a City of Atlanta Women Distinguished Service Award, a Georgia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Public Service Award, a Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless Award, the Georgia Conservation Voters Environmental Leadership Award, and the Georgia Department of Labor Outstanding Achievement Award; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sinkfield is united in love and marriage to her supportive husband, Richard, and she has been blessed with two remarkable children, Rita Denise and Richard III, and five delightful grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Honorable Georganna Sinkfield on her many outstanding achievements and invite her to be recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time to be determined by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Representative Georganna Sinkfield.
