RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Chi Eta Phi Sorority and its Mu Phi Chapter; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., is a professional association for registered
professional nurses and student nurses representing many cultures and diverse
ethnic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS,
founded in 1932 at Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C.,
Chi Eta Phi Sorority has a current membership of over 8,000, with 78 graduate
chapters and 38 undergraduate chapters in 26 states, the District of Columbia,
the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Liberia; and
WHEREAS,
the twelve jewels of the original class of Chi Eta Phi Sorority are Aliene C.
Ewell, Clara Beverly, Lillian M. Boswell, Gladys L. Catching, Bessie Cephas,
Henrietta Chisholm, Susan Freeman, Ruth Garrett, Olivia Howard, Mildred W.
Lucas, Clara B. Royster, and Katherine C. Turner; and
WHEREAS,
the purpose of Chi Eta Phi Sorority is to develop a corps of nursing leaders,
encourage continuing education, recruit nursing and health care professionals,
stimulate close and friendly relationships among members, and develop working
relationships with other professional groups; and
WHEREAS,
the Mu Phi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority was founded in Stone Mountain,
Georgia, on February 25, 1995, by B. Janet Cooper, J. Renee Davis, Nora Ervin,
Ceatrice Fulgeon, Dorothy Graves, Cheryl Handy, Carene Lee, and Lillian
Cleveland; and
WHEREAS,
on March 16-20, 2011, the Mu Phi Chapter will host the 58th Southeast Regional
Conference in Atlanta and expect approximately 200 to 250 professional nurses
from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; and
WHEREAS,
dedicated to promoting the Chi Eta Phi Sorority's national theme of "committed
and empowered to provide community service in a global society," the Mu Phi
Chapter has chosen the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children as the
recipient for this year's service project; and
WHEREAS,
it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding work of this fine
organization and its numerous contributions to the citizens of this state be
appropriately recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Mu Phi Chapter of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority for its
selfless service to the community and extend best wishes for a successful 58th
Southeast Regional Conference.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Mu Phi
Chapter of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority.
