A RESOLUTION


Recognizing the 2012 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Annual National Convention and Business Expo and recommending that Atlanta serve as the host city for this prestigious national event; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States, representing the largest segment of population growth and making up 8 percent of Georgia's population; and

WHEREAS, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) is a national organization founded in 1979 to foster Hispanic economic development and has assisted, developed, and promoted almost 3 million Hispanic-owned businesses in America that generate $400 billion in annual sales; and

WHEREAS, USHCC serves as the umbrella organization for 200 local Hispanic chambers in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Bolivia, and Uruguay; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) was established in 1984 to promote and support domestic and international economic development of Hispanic businesses and individuals and to serve as a link between non-Hispanic entities and the Hispanic market; and

WHEREAS, the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce serves over 1,200 members, including 850 companies on both domestic and international levels and enhances relationships with government officials in economic development agencies, state colleges and universities, and officials at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels; and

WHEREAS, the USHCC annual National Convention and Business Expo is the largest gathering of Hispanic business owners and attracts hundreds of entrepreneurs, CEOs, executives, students, and agency officials from around the country; and

WHEREAS, the annual convention and expo provides a forum for business and political leaders to discuss trends and opportunities as it relates to economic development; and

WHEREAS, the City of Atlanta has offered to host the 2012 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Annual National Convention and Business Expo, an opportunity which would provide an economic impact of up to $7 million to the state; and

WHEREAS, Atlanta, the capital city of Georgia, offers unparalleled convention facilities and amenities with over 2.1 million square feet of total exhibit space; and

WHEREAS, visitors to the convention and expo would experience Atlanta's dining, attractions, shopping, music, and nightlife, a mix of Southern hospitality with the excitement of a major metropolitan city; and

WHEREAS, 80 percent of the United States population is within a two-hour flight, which makes Atlanta one of the most accessible destinations in the country and a convenient trip for convention attendees; and

WHEREAS, the people of Georgia, renowned for their courtesy and hospitality, have successfully demonstrated their ability to make all feel welcome and at home as hosts of innumerable national and international events, including the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games; and

WHEREAS, the members of this body and the people of Georgia stand ready to assist in bringing the 2012 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Annual National Convention and Business Expo to this fine Southern state.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the exemplary work of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and request that the City of Atlanta serve as host for the 2012 United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Annual National Convention and Business Expo.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
