A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Bud Smith; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, a native of Atlanta, Bud Smith has become a legendary photographer since he found his calling as a teenager; and

WHEREAS, Bud Smith was inspired by his mentor, Raymond Simon, who provided Bud with the foundation he needed to launch his career; and

WHEREAS, his first major life-altering photography event presented itself at the age of 19 following the untimely death of Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Bud Smith, an African American man, attempted to document the atrocious episodes of the times with a camera setting the stage for what would be the career of a lifetime; and

WHEREAS, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1969, and due to his upbringing as it related to nonviolence and the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr., he signed up to serve an additional year training as a dental hygienist and serving his time in Korea, out of the line of fire; and

WHEREAS, Bud Smith has been blessed with phenomenal opportunities, including photographing the Martin Luther King Legacy and composing photojournalism for publications such as Ebony, Jet, Life, Time, Black Enterprise, and Homes of Color; and

WHEREAS, he has partnered with numerous corporations and nonprofit organizations, including Anheuser-Busch, Kraft Foods, Exxon Mobil, the United Negro College Fund, the National Black Arts Festival, the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB), and the Atlanta chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters; and

WHEREAS, he was part of an exhibit at Mason Murer Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta in 2009; and

WHEREAS, he was the first photographer for the final tour of the Jackson Five in New Orleans in 1979 and did work for Michael Jackson in 1984 during the Thriller Show at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, Bud Smith has dedicated his career to making a difference in his community and the lives of others, and his many achievements are worthy of recognition.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize Bud Smith for his amazing artistic career and commend his incredible work.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Bud Smith.
