A RESOLUTION

Commending the Georgia Chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and recognizing May as "Better Hearing and Speech Month"; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to raise awareness of the benefits, including the ability to use speech to communicate, of early diagnosis and intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing; and

WHEREAS, while hearing loss is one of the most common birth defects, most parents are not prepared for the challenges it poses nor are they aware of the options available to them to address these challenges; and

WHEREAS, early diagnosis is critical to the successful speech and language development of a child with a hearing loss; and

WHEREAS, if properly diagnosed and afforded the appropriate medical procedures and therapy, children with hearing loss can learn to listen and talk nearly as well as their hearing peers; and

WHEREAS, as part of "Better Hearing and Speech Month" in May, the Georgia Chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is sponsoring the Second Annual Talk.Walk.Run. event in Roswell, Georgia.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Georgia Chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for their efforts to educate and provide awareness of the benefits of early diagnosis of hearing loss in children and thank them for their sponsorship of the Talk.Walk.Run. event as part of "Better Hearing and Speech Month" this May.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the Georgia Chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
