1                          Senate Resolution 
2         A resolution recognizing the outstanding lifetime 
3         achievement of Marvin Dunn, Ph.D. 
4 
5         WHEREAS, Marvin Dunn, is a native Floridian, born in DeLand 
6  and educated in Florida’s public school system, and 
7         WHEREAS, in 1957, Marvin Dunn, graduated early from Euclid 
8  High School in DeLand and subsequently moved with his family to 
9  Miami, and 
10         WHEREAS, after graduating from Morehouse College in Atlanta 
11  with a B.A. in psychology in 1961, Marvin Dunn served in the 
12  United States Navy on the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Kitty Hawk 
13  and U.S.S. Saratoga and as the commander of the 14th Battalion, 
14  U.S. Naval Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, 
15  and 
16         WHEREAS, while still on active duty, Marvin Dunn studied at 
17  Roosevelt University in Chicago and, in 1965, received an M.A. 
18  in education administration and supervision, and 
19         WHEREAS, in 1972, Marvin Dunn earned a Ph.D. in psychology 
20  from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and 
21         WHEREAS, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., joined Florida International 
22  University in 1972 as an assistant professor of psychology and 
23  went on to found and serve as the director of the university’s 
24  Cultural and Human Interaction Center, and 
25         WHEREAS, from 1978 until 1980, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., served 
26  as associate vice president of University Outreach and Services 
27  at Florida International University, and 
28         WHEREAS, in 1980, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., founded the Academy 
29  for Community Education, an alternative high school in Miami, 
30  where he served as principal until 1993, and 
31         WHEREAS, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., is a prolific writer, 
32  authoring and co-authoring books, including The Miami Riots of 
33  1980: Crossing the Bounds, which is considered the definitive 
34  work on this historic event, and publishing countless articles 
35  in the mainstream media and academic journals, and 
36         WHEREAS, throughout his career, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., has 
37  worked for positive social change and social justice, and in 
38  1989 was named “Educator of the Year” by the Florida Civil 
39  Rights Commission, and 
40         WHEREAS, in 1994, at the invitation of activists in South 
41  Africa, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., represented the United States 
42  Department of State as the keynote speaker at a conference 
43  entitled “The Family in a Changing South Africa,” conducting 
44  workshops on conflict resolution and organizational development 
45  and counseling victims of violence in Cape Town, Johannesburg, 
46  and Durban, and 
47         WHEREAS, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., served as the senior mentor 
48  for the state of Florida as part of a national research project 
49  sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation which studied the 
50  effects of the welfare reform laws of 1996 on Florida’s poor, 
51  and 
52         WHEREAS, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., has directed two documentary 
53  films, “Black Seminoles in the Bahamas: The Red Bays Story” and 
54  “Murder on the Suwannee River: The Willie James Howard Story,” 
55  and is currently writing and directing a documentary film on the 
56  Rosewood Massacre of 1923, and 
57         WHEREAS, Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., is also founder of the 
58  nonprofit organization, Roots in the City, which hires indigent 
59  persons to develop community gardens in Miami’s inner-city 
60  areas, NOW, THEREFORE, 
61 
62  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 
63 
64         That Marvin Dunn, Ph.D., is recognized for his outstanding 
65  lifetime achievements and for his many contributions to 
66  education and social justice. 
67         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 
68  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Marvin Dunn, 
69  Ph.D., as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida 
70  Senate.
