1                          Senate Resolution 
2         A resolution recognizing April 6, 2010, as “FSU Day” 
3         in Florida. 
4 
5         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University 
6  is the oldest continuous site of higher education in this state 
7  and is home to Florida’s first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which 
8  was chartered in 1935, and 
9         WHEREAS, in 1994, Florida State University joined an elite 
10  group of the nation’s top research universities by receiving the 
11  designation as a “Research I” institution by the Carnegie 
12  Foundation, and 
13         WHEREAS, Florida State University offers graduate and 
14  undergraduate degrees in 322 program areas within 15 independent 
15  colleges and schools, taught by a faculty of 2,268, which has 
16  included 12 National Academy of Sciences members and six Nobel 
17  Laureates, and 
18         WHEREAS, since Florida State University opened the Office 
19  of National Fellowships in January 2005, FSU students have won 
20  more than 40 nationally competitive scholarships and 
21  fellowships, including three Rhodes Scholarships, three Truman 
22  Scholarships, three Goldwater Scholarships, the Jack Kent Cooke 
23  Scholarship, the Udall Scholarship, and 22 Fulbright 
24  Fellowships, and 
25         WHEREAS, Florida State University houses the National High 
26  Magnetic Field Laboratory, which uses the world’s most powerful 
27  magnet to conduct research on the frontiers of science and 
28  engineering technologies for a new century, and 
29         WHEREAS, Florida State University established the Institute 
30  for Energy Systems, Economics, and Sustainability, a public 
31  resource that unites researchers from the disciplines of 
32  engineering, natural sciences, law, urban and regional planning, 
33  geography, and economics to address sustainability and 
34  alternative power issues, thereby leading to more informed 
35  governance, economics, and decisionmaking, and 
36         WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine, 
37  with its statewide network of more than 1,500 physician-faculty 
38  members, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary as the nation’s 
39  newest fully accredited medical school, and is fulfilling its 
40  unique statutory mission to develop patient-centered physicians 
41  for elderly, rural, minority, underserved, and other Floridians, 
42  and 
43         WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the 
44  lives of Florida State University students due to the long 
45  standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural 
46  diversity on its campuses, along with the aggressive recruitment 
47  of diverse groups of students, and 
48         WHEREAS, on February 1, 2010, Florida State University 
49  welcomed FSU alumnus Eric Barron, Ph.D., as its 14th President, 
50  NOW, THEREFORE,

52  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 
53 
54         That April 6, 2010, is recognized as “FSU Day” in Florida. 
55         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 
56  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Florida State 
57  University President Eric Barron, Ph.D., as a tangible token of 
58  the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
