    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing February 9, 2022, as “FSU
    3         Day” in Florida, in recognition of Florida State
    4         University’s contribution as an outstanding
    5         institution of higher education.
    6  
    7         WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State
    8  University, founded in 1851, is the oldest continuous site of
    9  higher education in Florida, and
   10         WHEREAS, Florida State University is proud to be recognized
   11  as a preeminent university by the State of Florida, and as a
   12  leader in education, research, student retention, and
   13  graduation, and
   14         WHEREAS, Florida State University is a nationally
   15  recognized institution, with many of its colleges and programs
   16  ranked among the top 10 in the nation, and
   17         WHEREAS, Florida State University was No. 19 among top
   18  public universities in the U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best
   19  Colleges rankings, reaffirming its place in the Top 20 for the
   20  third consecutive year, and was ranked by the publication as No.
   21  5 on the list of Best Value Colleges among public universities
   22  and No. 26 in Best Colleges for Veterans, and
   23         WHEREAS, Florida State University has a 4-year graduation
   24  rate of 74 percent, the highest in the state, which places the
   25  university in the top 10 in the nation among public research
   26  institutions, and
   27         WHEREAS, Florida State University was honored with a
   28  national award by the Association of Public and Land-grant
   29  Universities for its efforts to eliminate enrollment gaps by
   30  race, ethnicity, and income level, and
   31         WHEREAS, Florida State University offers graduate,
   32  undergraduate, doctoral, and professional degrees in 306
   33  programs within 19 independent colleges and schools, with
   34  courses taught by an illustrious faculty of 2,094, including 6
   35  Nobel laureates, and
   36         WHEREAS, Florida State University has a student-faculty
   37  ratio of 21-to-1, meaning that 61 percent of its offered classes
   38  have fewer than 20 students, and
   39         WHEREAS, Florida State University’s 2021 freshman class is
   40  one of the brightest and most diverse in school history, drawing
   41  students from 66 Florida counties, all 50 states and the
   42  District of Columbia, and 49 countries, and
   43         WHEREAS, this outstanding class boasts a median GPA of 4.3,
   44  a median SAT score of 1310, and a median ACT composite score of
   45  29, and
   46         WHEREAS, Florida State University is a top research
   47  institution in producing Fulbright Scholars, with three students
   48  receiving awards in 2021-2022, and
   49         WHEREAS, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine recognized Florida
   50  State University as a 2021 “Diversity Champion” for the sixth
   51  year in a row and awarded it the Higher Education Excellence in
   52  Diversity Award for the eighth consecutive year, an honor given
   53  to schools that demonstrate a promise to uphold and advance
   54  inclusion and diversity, and
   55         WHEREAS, in 2021, Florida State University said goodbye to
   56  retiring President John Thrasher and welcomed its 16th
   57  president, Richard McCullough, Ph.D., and
   58         WHEREAS, due to Florida State University’s longstanding
   59  practice of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity on
   60  its campus through the aggressive recruitment of diverse groups
   61  of students, the FSU college experience continues to enrich the
   62  lives of students, NOW, THEREFORE,
   63  
   64  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   65  
   66         That the Florida Senate hereby recognizes February 9, 2022,
   67  as “FSU Day” in Florida, in recognition of Florida State
   68  University’s contribution as an outstanding institution of
   69  higher education.
   70         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with
   71  the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Richard
   72  McCullough, Ph.D., the 16th president of Florida State
   73  University, as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida
   74  Senate.
