Florida Senate - 2021 SB 874 By Senator Brodeur 9-01153A-21 2021874__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to Alzheimer’s disease awareness; 3 creating s. 381.825, F.S.; requiring the Department of 4 Health, in collaboration with the Department of 5 Elderly Affairs and the Alzheimer’s Association, to 6 consolidate and disseminate certain information to 7 certain health care practitioners for a specified 8 purpose; specifying minimum requirements for such 9 information; providing an effective date. 10 11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 12 13 Section 1. Section 381.825, Florida Statutes, is created to 14 read: 15 381.825 Alzheimer’s disease awareness.—The Department of 16 Health, in collaboration with the Department of Elderly Affairs 17 and the Alzheimer’s Association, shall use existing, relevant 18 public health and community outreach programs to incorporate and 19 disseminate information to health care practitioners licensed 20 under chapters 458, 459, and 464 to educate them on and increase 21 their understanding and awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and 22 other types of dementia. This information must cover, at a 23 minimum, all of the following: 24 (1) The importance of early detection and timely diagnosis 25 of cognitive impairment. 26 (2) Utilization of a validated cognitive assessment tool. 27 (3) The value of Medicare annual wellness visits for 28 cognitive health. 29 (4) The use of the Medicare billing code for care planning 30 for individuals with cognitive impairment. 31 (5) Methods to detect early warning signs of Alzheimer’s 32 disease and other types of dementia. 33 (6) Methods to reduce the risk of cognitive decline, 34 particularly among individuals in diverse communities who are at 35 greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other types 36 of dementia. 37 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2021.
