House Resolution
2A resolution honoring Florida's athletes for their
3athletic endeavors, commending the Governor's Council on
4Physical Fitness for its leadership, and recognizing Chris
5Evert for her contributions in promoting physical fitness.

7 WHEREAS, April 28, 2010, Fitness Day at the Capitol, is an
8appropriate time for the House of Representatives to recognize
9and honor those athletes who represented the State of Florida in
10the Games of the XXIX Summer Olympiad and XXI Winter Olympiad,
11the 2008 Summer Paralympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics, and the
122007 Special Olympics World Summer Games and 2009 Special
13Olympics World Winter Games, and
14 WHEREAS, Fitness Day at the Capitol is a product of the
15state plan of action created by the Governor's Council on
16Physical Fitness, which is comprised of individuals with diverse
17and varied backgrounds, including physicians, educators,
18students, nutritionists, professional athletes, and former
19Olympians, and
20 WHEREAS, we recognize the former Olympians serving on the
21Council, Jennifer Capriati, Nancy Hogshead-Makar, Shannon
22Miller, Dorothy "Dot" Richardson, and Dara Torres, who give of
23their time and effort to promote a healthy Florida, and
24 WHEREAS, it is essential to promote health and wellness, to
25increase physical fitness through regular exercise and sound
26nutrition practices, and to reduce the rate of obesity and
27resulting chronic diseases for Floridians of all ages, and
28 WHEREAS, Florida's Olympians, Paralympians, and Special
29Olympians are role models who demonstrate the virtues and
30positive results of a healthy lifestyle that includes physical
31fitness, and
32 WHEREAS, due to years of hard work and preparation in both
33mind and body, these men and women persevered to reach the
34highest level of their respective athletic disciplines,
35representing their home state with honor, and
36 WHEREAS, espousing the Olympic motto of "Citius, Altius,
37Fortius," all of Florida's Olympians endeavor to achieve this
38higher standard of "Faster, Higher, Stronger," and
39 WHEREAS, twenty-five Floridians participated in the XXIX
40Summer Olympic Games held in Beijing, China, in 2008: Laura
41Bennett, North Palm Beach, Triathlon; James Blake, Tampa,
42Tennis; Damu Cherry, Tampa, Track and Field; Chris Colwill,
43Brandon, Diving; Rafeeq Curry, Miami, Track and Field; Phil
44Dalhausseer, Ormond Beach, Volleyball; Walter Dix, Coral
45Springs, Track and Field; Dwight Howard, Longwood, Basketball;
46Hunter Kemper, Longwood, Triathlon; Kelly Kretschman, Indian
47Harbour Beach, Softball; Matthew LaPorta, Port Charlotte,
48Baseball; Ryan Lochte, Daytona Beach, Swimming; David Oliver,
49Orlando, Track and Field; Brian Olson, Tallahassee, Judo; Zach
50Railey, Clearwater, Sailing; Nancy Rios, Miami, Sailing; Tiffany
51Ross-Williams, Miami, Track and Field; Calvin Smith,
52Gainesville, Track and Field; Nathan Sturgis, St. Augustine,
53Soccer; Jevon Tarantino, Boca Raton, Diving; Dara Torres,
54Jupiter, Swimming; Anna Tunnicliffe, Fort Lauderdale, Sailing;
55Lauryn Williams, Miami, Track and Field; Serena Williams, Palm
56Beach Gardens, Tennis; and Venus Williams, Palm Beach Gardens,
57Tennis, and
58 WHEREAS, five Floridians participated in the XXI Winter
59Olympic Games held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in
602010: Jeremy Barrett, Venice, Figure Skating; Caydee Denney,
61Wesley Chapel, Figure Skating; Mark Ladwig, Bradenton, Figure
62Skating; Jennifer Rodriguez, Miami, Speed Skating; and Jason
63Smith, Cape Coral, Curling, and
64 WHEREAS, many outstanding athletes represented Florida as
65United States team members competing in the 2008 Summer
66Paralympics, the 2010 Winter Paralympics, the 2007 Special
67Olympics World Summer Games, and the 2009 Special Olympics World
68Winter Games, and
69 WHEREAS, all Florida's Olympians, Paralympians, and Special
70Olympians, along with Florida's youth, collegiate, and
71professional athletes, deserve acclamation for demonstrating the
72importance of physical fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle,
73and
74 WHEREAS, Fitness Day at the Capitol is also an appropriate
75time to recognize Floridian Chris Evert, tennis great and
76founder of the Evert Tennis Academy, for her contributions in
77promoting the physical fitness of Florida's youth, and
78 WHEREAS, Chris Evert serves as an example to Florida's
79children of how to become physically fit, incorporate fitness
80into everyday life, and maintain a healthy lifestyle that leads
81to a better future, and it is fitting that she be recognized as
82a spokesperson for physical fitness throughout the State of
83Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

85Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
86Florida:

88 That the Florida House of Representatives commends the
89effort and determination of Florida's Olympians, Paralympians,
90and Special Olympians, along with Florida's youth, collegiate,
91and professional athletes; commends the members of the
92Governor's Council on Physical Fitness for their leadership; and
93recognizes Chris Evert as Florida's spokesperson for physical
94fitness.
95 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
96presented to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and to
97Chris Evert as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed
98herein.
