1	House Resolution
2	A resolution commending The Links, Incorporated, for its
3	work in Florida.

5	WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, is a highly respected
6	international organization consisting of more than 12,000
7	professional, accomplished, and dedicated women of African
8	ancestry in 270 chapters, located in 42 states, the District of
9	Columbia, and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, with a mission
10	and purpose of friendship and community service, and
11	WHEREAS, members of The Links are role models, mentors,
12	activists, and volunteers who work toward purposeful public
13	service with educational, cultural, and civic commitments
14	through four functional facets - International Trends and
15	Services, National Trends and Services, the Arts, and Services
16	to Youth, and
17	WHEREAS, the National Trends and Services facet of The
18	Links, Incorporated, also encompasses service related to three
19	Linkages, including education, health and wellness, and
20	legislative work, which highlights and addresses concerns of the
21	organization in these areas and also affects African Americans
22	and society, and
23	WHEREAS, the Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated,
24	announced that childhood obesity, which according to the Centers
25	for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a public health
26	epidemic that poses one of the most urgent threats to the health
27	and well-being of children and their families, shall be its
28	focused program initiative, and
29	WHEREAS, the Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated, has
30	officially launched its Childhood Obesity Initiative and
31	simultaneously announced its partnership with other health
32	organizations to provide resources to support this initiative
33	with chapters located throughout the Southern Area, and
34	WHEREAS, Links from around the State of Florida have
35	assembled on March 25, 2010, to demonstrate their support for
36	the elimination of childhood obesity and to focus their efforts
37	on establishing, supporting, and continuing to identify those
38	programs aimed at preventing childhood obesity and to encourage
39	Legislators to monitor, implement, and seek progress on this
40	issue through legislation, and
41	WHEREAS, Representative Audrey Gibson and Representative
42	Geraldine F. Thompson are members of The Links, Incorporated,
43	NOW, THEREFORE,

45	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
46	Florida:

48	That this body does pause in its deliberations to pay its
49	respects to the dedicated efforts and example of the Southern
50	Area of The Links, Incorporated, led by Link Mary F. Currie,
51	Area Director, in its successful campaign to eliminate childhood
52	obesity and support those programs that support this initiative
53	and assist to create a better quality of life for the children
54	of this state.
