House Resolution
2A resolution commending The Links, Incorporated, for its
3work in Florida.

5 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, is a highly respected
6international organization consisting of more than 12,000
7professional, accomplished, and dedicated women of African
8ancestry in 270 chapters, located in 42 states, the District of
9Columbia, and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, with a mission
10and purpose of friendship and community service, and
11 WHEREAS, members of The Links are role models, mentors,
12activists, and volunteers who work toward purposeful public
13service with educational, cultural, and civic commitments
14through four functional facets - International Trends and
15Services, National Trends and Services, the Arts, and Services
16to Youth, and
17 WHEREAS, the National Trends and Services facet of The
18Links, Incorporated, also encompasses service related to three
19Linkages, including education, health and wellness, and
20legislative work, which highlights and addresses concerns of the
21organization in these areas and also affects African Americans
22and society, and
23 WHEREAS, the Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated,
24announced that childhood obesity, which according to the Centers
25for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a public health
26epidemic that poses one of the most urgent threats to the health
27and well-being of children and their families, shall be its
28focused program initiative, and
29 WHEREAS, the Southern Area of The Links, Incorporated, has
30officially launched its Childhood Obesity Initiative and
31simultaneously announced its partnership with other health
32organizations to provide resources to support this initiative
33with chapters located throughout the Southern Area, and
34 WHEREAS, Links from around the State of Florida have
35assembled on March 25, 2010, to demonstrate their support for
36the elimination of childhood obesity and to focus their efforts
37on establishing, supporting, and continuing to identify those
38programs aimed at preventing childhood obesity and to encourage
39Legislators to monitor, implement, and seek progress on this
40issue through legislation, and
41 WHEREAS, Representative Audrey Gibson and Representative
42Geraldine F. Thompson are members of The Links, Incorporated,
43NOW, THEREFORE,

45Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
46Florida:

48 That this body does pause in its deliberations to pay its
49respects to the dedicated efforts and example of the Southern
50Area of The Links, Incorporated, led by Link Mary F. Currie,
51Area Director, in its successful campaign to eliminate childhood
52obesity and support those programs that support this initiative
53and assist to create a better quality of life for the children
54of this state.
