DELAWARE STATE SENATE

152nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 133

RECOGNIZING MARCH 2024 AS "COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, March is recognized as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a month for raising awareness of colorectal cancer and its prevention; and

WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Delaware; and

WHEREAS, colon cancer kills about 170 Delawareans every year; and

WHEREAS, the rate of death due to colon cancer in Delaware is 36% higher among African Americans in Delaware; and

WHEREAS, a healthy lifestyle and early detection through regular screening can help prevent colorectal cancer; and

WHEREAS, regular screening is recommended for people who are 45 years or older, have a family history of colorectal cancer, are overweight or obese, have a diet high in red meat and low in fruit and vegetables, smoke, or have other risk factors; and

WHEREAS, two types of screenings can detect colon cancer. A colonoscopy – which is a painless screening beginning at age 45 that can find polyps (noncancerous growths) that lead to cancer and remove them on the spot. And a FIT test, which is performed at home with a test kit that is then sent to a lab for testing. Both can detect colon cancer as most of these cancers start as polyps, and thus removing polyps can prevent cancer; and

WHEREAS, most preventative care is 100% covered and colorectal cancer is highly treatable when detected early.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the members of the General Assembly hereby recognize the month of March 2024 as "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of Delaware.
