148th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 39

RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 25, 2015, AS "INTERNATIONAL ATAXIA AWARENESS DAY" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.



WHEREAS, ataxia is a group of rare, progressive neurological diseases that affects balance, coordination, and speech; and

WHEREAS, ataxia is often fatal and can strike at any time, without regard to age, gender, or race; and

WHEREAS, there currently is no treatment or cure for those affected by ataxia; and

WHEREAS, approximately 150,000 people in the United States and approximately 7 people in Delaware are diagnosed with ataxia; and

WHEREAS, the Delaware Ataxia Support Group is based in Newark and meets several times per year at Christiana Care in Newark; and

WHEREAS, a group of 3 Delawareans who have ataxia and 2 of their spouses held and raised over $20,000 through a "Walk, Roll 'N Run for Ataxia" at Glasgow Park in 2012, and have raised over $30,000 total through other fundraising efforts for the National Ataxia Foundation to contribute to ongoing research toward treatment and a cure; and

WHEREAS, the same group would like to continue their fundraising efforts as well as raise awareness for this rare disease; and

WHEREAS, the National Ataxia Foundation's stated purpose is to be "dedicated to improving the lives of persons affected by ataxia through support, education, and research"; and

WHEREAS, ataxia organizations around the world have united in dedicating September 25th as International Ataxia Awareness Day; and

WHEREAS, proclamations and resolutions have been signed in Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania declaring September 25 as International Ataxia Awareness Day; and

WHEREAS, the General Assembly recognizes that ataxia is a disease for which research and awareness is needed; and

WHEREAS, the General Assembly believes that recognizing September 25, 2015, as "International Ataxia Awareness Day" in this State will increase awareness of this debilitating disease.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that September 25, 2015, is hereby recognized as "International Ataxia Awareness Day" in the State of Delaware.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, upon passage, a suitably prepared and duly authenticated copy of this joint resolution shall be forwarded to the Secretary of Delaware's Department of Health & Social Services and Michael Parent, Executive Director of the National Ataxia Foundation, at the organization's national headquarters, 2600 Fernbrook Lane, Suite 119, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55447-0167.


SYNOPSIS

This concurrent resolution designates September 25, 2015, as "International Ataxia Awareness Day" in the State of Delaware.
