AN ACT CONCERNING THE SALE AND DISTRIBUTION OF SILVER OXIDE BATTERIES AND PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN SILVER OXIDE BATTERIES.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

Section 1. Subsection (e) of section 22a-616 of the general statutes is repealed and the following is substituted in lieu thereof (Effective from passage):

(e) Notwithstanding the provisions of section 22a-617, on and after July 1, 2011, no person shall offer for sale or distribute for promotional purposes button cell batteries containing mercury or any product containing such batteries, except that silver oxide batteries and any product containing silver oxide batteries may be offered for sale or distributed for promotional purposes until July 1, 2012. Any silver oxide battery manufactured or distributed prior to July 1, 2012, may be offered for sale in this state. A manufacturer that produces or sells button cell batteries containing mercury or any product containing such batteries shall notify retailers about the provisions of this subsection and how to dispose of the remaining inventory property, except silver oxide batteries or any product that contains a silver oxide battery, in accordance with this title.

This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections:

Statement of Purpose:

To authorize the continued sale and distribution of silver oxide batteries and products that contain silver oxide batteries.
