AN ACT CONCERNING THE E-VERIFY PROGRAM.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

Section 1. (NEW) (Effective from passage) (a) On and after January 1, 2011, any employer who employs fifty or more persons in the state shall register with and utilize the employment status verification system to verify the work eligibility status of each newly hired employee. For the purposes of this section "employment status verification system" means the federal electronic employment authorization program known as "E-Verify" or any successor program, created pursuant to 8 USC 1324a and operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security, and "employer" means a person engaged in business who has employees, including the state and any political subdivision thereof.

(b) The Labor Department shall adopt regulations to implement the provisions of this section in accordance with the provisions of chapter 54 of the general statutes.

This act shall take effect as follows and shall amend the following sections:
