Detective Luca Benedetti Memorial Overpass.
This measure would designate the Buena Vista Avenue overpass at postmile marker 29.985 on State Route 101 in the County of San Luis Obispo as the Detective Luca Benedetti Memorial Overpass. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, erect those signs.

WHEREAS, Luca Benedetti was born in San Francisco, California, in 1984 to Italian immigrant parents; and
WHEREAS, Benedetti was raised in a close-knit Italian family where he learned the importance of hard work and integrity firsthand; and
WHEREAS, Benedetti later attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he studied engineering and met his future wife, Grace, bonding over their shared love of family, craft beer, and friends; and
WHEREAS, On February 23, 2013, Luca and Grace were married in Templeton, California; and
WHEREAS, They welcomed their first child, Ellie on July 5, 2014, and a few years later, they welcomed their second daughter, Giovanna; and
WHEREAS, Though he studied Computer Engineering, Benedetti discovered his true passion was law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, Benedetti graduated from the Allan Hancock Police Academy and began his career with the Atascadero Police Department in 2008, moving to the San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) in 2012, where he became a member of the San Luis Obispo Regional SWAT Team; and
WHEREAS, During his time with the SLOPD, Benedetti served in additional special assignments, including Traffic Accident Reconstruction, Information Technology, and Field Training Officer; and
WHEREAS, Benedetti received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving award in four consecutive years for leading the department in successful DUI arrests, and even had the privilege of delivering a baby in the department parking lot; and
WHEREAS, Detective Luca Benedetti was tragically killed in the line of duty on May 10, 2021, while serving a search warrant as a member of the SWAT Team; and
WHEREAS, Benedetti was best described by those closest to him as genuine, hardworking, kind, talented, and intelligent, and made everyone he met feel special; and
WHEREAS, Benedetti was a mentor to younger officers and a leader in the department and on the SWAT Team, who insisted on being “first in the stack” on May 10, 2021, to serve the search warrant; and
WHEREAS, Detective Luca Benedetti is loved and missed by all who knew him, especially his wife and two children; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the Buena Vista Avenue overpass at postmile marker 29.985 on State Route 101 in the County of San Luis Obispo as the Detective Luca Benedetti Memorial Overpass; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
