A RESOLUTION

recognizing the country fair white elephant on its fiftieth anniversary.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, the Country Fair White Elephant is a volunteer-operated nonprofit thrift store that collects and resells donated items to raise money for distribution to local schools and nonprofit organizations to improve the quality of life in the Santa Cruz Valley of Arizona; and

Whereas, a small group of local community leaders organized the Country Fair White Elephant in 1964 to promote good fellowship and to provide opportunities for Green Valley residents to get better acquainted and give back to the community.  That year, the Country Fair White Elephant sale netted a profit of $146.20 with only 16 volunteers; and

Whereas, since 1964, the Country Fair White Elephant has donated more than $26 million to over 700 worthy organizations.  Each year it contributes funding to more than 120 local schools and nonprofit organizations.  All of the residents of the Santa Cruz Valley benefit from the time, talent and energy of the Country Fair White Elephant volunteers; and

Whereas, in the past year, nearly 600 volunteers donated approximately 120,000 volunteer hours to the Country Fair White Elephant.  At Independent Sector's current "Value of Volunteer Time" of $22.14 per hour, that equates to over $2.66 million of economic impact; and

Whereas, through the Country Fair White Elephant's Hollace G. Roberts Educational Foundation, the Country Fair White Elephant has given over $1.6 million in scholarships to an estimated 120 local high school students; and

Whereas, the Country Fair White Elephant donates items that it cannot resell to other charitable organizations and causes, greatly enhancing the scope of its contributions to the community.  The Country Fair White Elephant has donated to the Salvation Army, the Lions Club, Kiwanis, Casa Community Services, prison ministries, border patrol dog training and local schools, churches and shelters.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the Senate recognize the Country Fair White Elephant on its fiftieth anniversary and celebrate its tremendous success in improving the quality of life in the Santa Cruz Valley of Arizona.
