A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
proclaiming may 2012 as skin cancer awareness month in arizona.

Whereas, most people do not realize that the skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic functions; and
Whereas, current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime; and
Whereas, more than 3.5 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year; and
Whereas, in 2010, there were approximately 114,900 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, diagnosed in the United States; and
Whereas, melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults who are 25 to 29 years old, and it is the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults who are 15 to 29 years old; and
Whereas, the estimated total direct cost associated with the treatment of melanoma in 2004 was $291 million; and
Whereas, melanoma and other skin cancers are highly treatable if detected early; and
Whereas, ultraviolet radiation, whether from the sun or from tanning parlors, is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, including melanoma; and
Whereas, the American Academy of Dermatology's Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month is a public education campaign designed to promote the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers; and
Whereas, the American Academy of Dermatology has designated May 7, 2012 as Melanoma Monday, its premier skin cancer awareness event, and encourages all Americans to "be sun smart" and to participate in free skin cancer screening through the Academy's National Skin Cancer Screening Program.
Therefore
Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the Legislature designates May 2012 as Skin Cancer Awareness Month in Arizona and encourages all citizens to participate in appropriate skin cancer education and screening activities.
