HOUSE BILL 2228

 

 

 

AN ACT

 

amending Title 15, chapter 1, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-117; relating to public high schools.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.  Title 15, chapter 1, article 1, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-117, to read:

START_STATUTE15-117.  Academic growth awards; rules; definition

A.  Subject to available appropriations, the state board of education and the department of education shall annually present an award to the public high school that demonstrates the highest levels of student academic growth within each classification.  The awards presented pursuant to this section must be in the form of trophies that resemble the trophies presented for athletic accomplishments.  The state board of education shall adopt rules to establish the method of identifying the public high schools that demonstrate the highest rate of student longitudinal growth in one or more school years.

B.  The awards issued pursuant to this section are named for each classification and known as the academic growth award for that classification.

C.  Notwithstanding any other law, the department of education shall use up to one thousand dollars each year from the monies appropriated to or other monies received by the department to award trophies pursuant to this section.

D.  For the purposes of this section, "classification" means a grouping of schools that corresponds to the classification system for schools established by a statewide interscholastic association in this state. END_STATUTE
