An Act

 

amending title 15, chapter 2, article 2, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-249.01; appropriating monies; relating to the department of education.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1. Title 15, chapter 2, article 2, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-249.01, to read:

START_STATUTE15-249.01. Testing for private school and homeschool students

A. The department of education shall establish a program to allow any student who is enrolled in a private school in this state or any homeschooled student in this state to take any of the following examinations at no cost to the student or the student's parent:

1. Any nationally standardized norm-referenced achievement examination.

2. The statewide assessment pursuant to section 15-741.

3. Any examination related to college or university admissions that assesses reading and mathematics.

B. The department of education shall do all of the following:

1. Designate the locations and dates of the examinations offered pursuant to subsection A of this section and post this information on its website, except that any examination offered pursuant to subsection A of this section shall be on a Saturday or Sunday.

2. Keep the results of any examination offered pursuant to subsection A of this section confidential and release the results to only the student who completed the examination and the student's parent.

3. Provide a contact in the department who is available to discuss with students and parents the results of any examination offered pursuant to subsection A of this section and any learning or remediation options.

4. Annually notify the parent of each student receiving Arizona empowerment scholarship account monies under chapter 19 of this title of the program established pursuant to this section. END_STATUTE

Sec. 2. Appropriation; department of education; examinations

The sum of $1,000,000 is appropriated from the state general fund in fiscal year 2023-2024 to the department of education for the purposes prescribed in section 15-249.01, Arizona Revised Statutes, as added by this act.
