SENATE RESOLUTION 21

Designating February 1, 2023, as National Unclaimed Property Day at the Legislature.

Whereas, The West Virginia Treasurer's Office joins in celebrating the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators in celebrating the 3rd National Awareness Day; and

Whereas, The West Virginia State Treasurer's Office secures the holdings of millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and other financial tangible assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specific period of time and the property is passed to the state as unclaimed property; and

Whereas, The West Virginia State Treasurer's Office holds the property for the owner, businesses, municipalities, schools, nonprofits, and small businesses, until it can be claimed; and

Whereas, In FY 2022, the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office Unclaimed Property division, successfully processed over 19,200 claims and returned $18.6 million to owners or their heirs; and

Whereas, To find out if you could have unclaimed property, please visit the West Virginia Treasurer's Unclaimed Property website at www.wvtreasury.com and file your claim using this free service; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate designates February 1, 2023, as National Unclaimed Property Day at the Legislature; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Treasurer of the State of West Virginia, the Honorable Riley Moore.
