SENATE RESOLUTION 18

(By Senators Clements, Maroney, Caputo, Oliverio, Taylor, and Smith)

[Introduced January 29, 2024]

 

Designating January 30, 2024, as “West Virginia University Day” at the Legislature.

Whereas, West Virginia University is the state’s first and largest land-grant university, which has been dedicated to serving the citizens of West Virginia for more than 155 years; and

Whereas, West Virginia University offers students the perks and programs of a major research institution at a great value; and

Whereas, West Virginia University offers more than 340 majors at the bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional levels to help students discover their passion and fulfill their purpose; and

Whereas, West Virginia University Extension serves as the primary outreach arm of West Virginia University with an office in each of the state’s 55 counties, where agents and specialists deliver trusted research and innovative solutions to improve the lives and livelihoods of all West Virginians in the areas of youth development, agriculture and natural resources, community engagement, health and nutrition, and family and community development; and

Whereas, West Virginia University Extension experts aid West Virginians in building economic prosperity through career exploration and workforce training opportunities for 21st century jobs, particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math; and

Whereas, West Virginia University Extension aims to equip the next generation with leadership, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial skills through youth education and outreach programs such as Energy Express, Career Readiness, STEM, and West Virginia’s state 4-H, the largest youth organization in the state, which reaches more than 68,000 youths; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby designates January 30, 2024, as “West Virginia University Day”; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the President of West Virginia University, E. Gordon Gee, and to West Virginia University Extension.
