Requesting the Division of Highways name bridge number ACNS-0035(166), 10799, beginning at Latitude 38.770528, Longitude -82.049710, ending at Latitude 38.770995, Longitude -82.047531, carrying US Route 35 over Lower Nine Mile Road, WV Route 38, in Mason County, the "U.S. Army PFC John Wesley Meadows Memorial Bridge".
Whereas, John Wesley Meadows was born September 2, 1922, in Beech Hill, to Thorden and Margaret (Dye) Meadows; and
Whereas, As a child, John and his four brothers and one sister worked on the family farm less than half a mile from the bridge, where they grew crops and raised livestock; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows served in the United States Army during World War II, landing with the first wave of the 4th Infantry Division on June 6, 1944, at Utah Beach in Normandy, France; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows served with the 4th Infantry Division through the entirety of the war as an anti-tank gunner on a half track crew and, later, on a mortar crew; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows participated in many major engagements, including the Battle of the Bulge, and he was in Germany when the war ended; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the Distinguished Unit Badge, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a Bronze Arrowhead and Silver Service Star; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows returned home to West Virginia after the war, where he worked as a lineman in construction of the power plants in the Mid-Ohio Valley, including Kyger Creek, Gavin, Philip Sporn, Mountaineer, and John Amos; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows was a 68-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Huntington; and
Whereas, PFC Meadows died on February 25, 2017, and was interred in the Concord Cemetery after receiving military graveside rites; and
Whereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate U.S. Army PFC John Wesley Meadows and his contributions to our state and country; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name bridge number ACNS-0035(166), 10799, beginning at Latitude 38.770528, Longitude -82.049710, ending at Latitude 38.770995, Longitude -82.047531, carrying US Route 35 over Lower Nine Mile Road, WV Route 38, in Mason County, the "U.S. Army PFC John Wesley Meadows Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the "U.S. Army PFC John Wesley Meadows Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
