WHEREAS, K9 Batman, an explosives and weapons detection canine with the Virginia State Police, retired on January 31, 2024, after seven years of outstanding service; and
WHEREAS, a nine-year-old shepherd mix, K9 Batman graduated from Virginia State Police Explosives and Weapons Detection Canine Basic School in December 2017 with his handler, Senior Trooper Christopher R. Turner; and
WHEREAS, K9 Batman was primarily assigned to Virginia State Police Division Five in Chesapeake but traveled throughout the Commonwealth for special assignments; and
WHEREAS, K9 Batman patrolled grade schools, colleges and universities, court houses, military bases, prisons, and businesses in search of explosives and weapons and conducted pre-event security sweeps at graduations, football games, conferences, concerts, political rallies, dignitary visits, and other special events; and
WHEREAS, K9 Batman assisted other Virginia State Police investigators and local law-enforcement officers by successfully locating firearms and firearm casings used in robberies and shootings; and
WHEREAS, K9 Batman engaged with members of the public by demonstrating his skills at schools, churches, and other neighborhood and community events; and
WHEREAS, throughout his career, K9 Batman fulfilled his duties with dedication and distinction; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That K9 Batman hereby be commended for his exceptional service to the Chesapeake community and the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Senior Trooper Christopher R. Turner as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for K9 Batman's contributions to public safety.
