16106247D WHEREAS, the residents of the Sleepy Hollow community of Fairfax County established the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association in 1941; and WHEREAS, over the past 75 years the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association has represented, protected, and served the residents of the community, located at the eastern edge of Fairfax County near Falls Church and Arlington; and WHEREAS, during the early years of the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association, World War II was on residents' minds, and the association was concerned with supporting the war effort through civil defense and victory gardens; and WHEREAS, by the early 1950s, the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association had taken the lead in the development of a neighborhood swimming pool and recreation center, and such annual traditions as the fall cleanup and Christmas decoration contest were already well-established; and WHEREAS, in the 1960s, the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association spearheaded the successful efforts to prevent annexation of the neighborhood by the City of Falls Church and to defeat several rezoning plans; and WHEREAS, through the years, various committees of the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association have grappled with such issues as public school boundaries, public water and sewage systems, street lighting, zoning, area revitalization, and public safety; and WHEREAS, the Sleepy Hollow community, a warm and friendly neighborhood only 20 minutes from the White House, has established a year-round series of events that encourage residents to take part in community life; and WHEREAS, the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association sponsors neighborhood picnics, the Halloween parade, the Easter Egg Hunt, the Taste of the Hollow, and other such events to bring the neighborhood together and preserve the unique spirit of the Sleepy Hollow community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association hereby be commended on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's congratulations and admiration for the group's contributions to the Fairfax County community. |
