WHEREAS, Jack William Nurney, Jr., a highly admired member of the Suffolk community who touched countless lives through his generosity, civic-minded leadership, and personal integrity, died on September 29, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Jack Nurney grew up in Suffolk and spent his summers on the Nansemond River in Bennett's Creek; he attended Suffolk High School, then earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Military Institute before serving on active duty in the United States Army during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, after his honorable military service, Jack Nurney attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and pursued a long and successful career in the insurance industry; and
WHEREAS, Jack Nurney worked for Woodward and Elam Insurance Agency for 18 years, served as president of Nurney-Stephenson Insurance Company for 23 years, and subsequently retired as a member of J. Walter Hosier & Son, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, outside of his career, Jack Nurney offered his wisdom and expertise to the Suffolk Highway Safety Commission and the Suffolk Board of Zoning Appeals; and
WHEREAS, Jack Nurney also served community members in need as a leader in the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross, the Nansemond-Suffolk United Way, the Suffolk Rotary Club, and the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, among many other organizations; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his legacy of contributions to the residents of Suffolk, Jack Nurney received the First Citizen of Suffolk award in 1997; he inspired members of the community through his exceptional character and his servant's heart, humility, and genuine grace; and
WHEREAS, Jack Nurney was a loyal alumnus of Virginia Military Institute, who counseled many young people about their plans for higher education and military service, participated in recruiting events throughout Hampton Roads, and supported current cadets; and
WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Jack Nurney was a lifelong member of Suffolk Christian Church, where he volunteered his leadership to several church boards and committees over the years; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Ann, Jack Nurney will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Ann, Susan, and William, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jack William Nurney, Jr., a pillar of the Suffolk community and a true Virginia gentleman; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack William Nurney, Jr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
