SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 183
Commending Jean Shrewsbury.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 8, 2024

 

WHEREAS, on December 31, 2023, Jean Shrewsbury retired as commissioner of the revenue for Augusta County after 28 years of outstanding contributions to her colleagues and service to local residents; and

WHEREAS, shortly after becoming commissioner of the revenue, Jean Shrewsbury recognized that numerous members of the office were fulfilling various roles and responsibilities outside of their normal duties and advocated for fair salaries that were equal to those of other county employees at the time; and

WHEREAS, leading the office for nearly three decades, Jean Shrewsbury witnessed growth and change in the community and helped the office adapt to new technology and procedures to better serve residents; and

WHEREAS, Jean Shrewsbury helped the office become more involved in regional and state affairs by joining the West District Central Commissioners Association and the Virginia Commissioner of the Revenue Association; and

WHEREAS, Jean Shrewsbury served as president of the Virginia Commissioner of the Revenue Association and offered her leadership and expertise to several committees, including the Career Development Committee, where she was a mentor to fellow commissioners of the revenue across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Jean Shrewsbury also taught classes on all areas of tax assessment through the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia for more than a decade; and

WHEREAS, Jean Shrewsbury earned the 2010 Sam T. Barfield Award of Excellence for her legacy of accomplishments on behalf of the Virginia Commissioner of the Revenue Association; and

WHEREAS, after her well-earned retirement, Jean Shrewsbury plans to spend more time with her son, Charles, and his family, and travel across the country with her husband, Craig; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Jean Shrewsbury hereby be commended on the occasion of her retirement as commissioner of the revenue for Augusta County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jean Shrewsbury as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for her personal and professional achievements and service to Augusta County.
