Commending Malcolm B. "Mac" Wiseman.

WHEREAS, Malcolm B. "Mac" Wiseman, a native of Crimora, a talented and multifaceted bluegrass musician known as "The Voice with a Heart," was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014; and

WHEREAS, Mac Wiseman was a singer who gained a popular following for his recordings of songs such as "Shackles and Chains," "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," and "Love Letters in the Sand"; the Augusta County native's long and productive career began more than 60 years ago; and

WHEREAS, early in his music career, Mac Wiseman worked for WSVA radio in Harrisonburg, and from 1953 to 1956, he performed regularly on The Old Dominion Barn Dance radio show, which was produced by WRVA radio in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Mac Wiseman has had many other roles in country music; he was a sought-after sideman for Flatt & Scruggs, and performed with Bill Monroe; he was a featured vocalist with Molly O'Day; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Mac Wiseman recorded and worked for Dot Records in Tennessee; he was country recording director and later became a producer for the company; and he was a founding member and the first secretary of the Country Music Association; and

WHEREAS, known for his gentlemanly manner, Mac Wiseman enjoyed great success over many decades in country and bluegrass music; some of his early well-known recordings are "Going Like Wildfire," "I Saw Your Face in the Moon," and "Waiting for the Boys"; and

WHEREAS, Mac Wiseman performed at many bluegrass festivals over the years and hosted his own festival in Kentucky for more than a decade; he continues to record, and in 2007, he released an album of standard American songs recorded with singer-songwriter John Prine; and

WHEREAS, Mac Wiseman's most recent album, Songs from My Mother's Hand, features songs his family listened to on a battery-powered radio they owned when they lived in Crimora in the 1920s and 1930s; his mother would jot down the lyrics as songs came over the air; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Malcolm B. "Mac" Wiseman, a native of Crimora in Augusta County, hereby be commended for being honored as a 2014 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Malcolm B. "Mac" Wiseman as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's congratulations and admiration for his many accomplishments during a long and successful career in music.
