WHEREAS, the Smithfield Packers Youth Sports 06U Blue team won the Peninsula Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization super bowl championship on November 18, 2023, at Poquoson Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Smithfield Packers Youth Sports draws student-athletes from the Isle of Wight County school system, including Carrollton Elementary School, Hardy Elementary School, and Westside Elementary School; Isle of Wight Academy; and beyond; and
WHEREAS, the Smithfield Packers include Elliot Alvarado, Paxton Brake, Weston Brake, Wyatt Brake, CaTai Clary, Boyce Farmer, Nelson Jackson IV, Charles Jenkins IV, Calvin Martin, Jr., Sutton McCormick, Kaysen Oliver, Jeremiah Pierce, Axel Snyder, Jayce Townsend, and Kyrie Wiggins; and
WHEREAS, the Smithfield Packers defeated the Grafton-Tabb Tigers by a score of 12–6 in double overtime to bring home the program's second consecutive state title; and
WHEREAS, the Smithfield Packers' victory was a total team effort, with Kyrie Wiggins scoring a touchdown on the first possession in the first quarter, followed by CaTai Clary scoring the game-winning touchdown and the defense holding their opponents scoreless in the final minutes of the second overtime; and
WHEREAS, the Smithfield Packers concluded its season with an impressive 12–1 record, a testament to the teamwork, dedication, and perseverance the team and program have enjoyed over the past few years; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Smithfield Packers is the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes; the leadership and guidance of their coaches, parents, and the faculty and staff of Isle of Wight County Public Schools and Isle of Wight Academy; and the unwavering support of the entire Smithfield Packers family and the communities of the Town of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Smithfield Packers Youth Sports 06U Blue team hereby be commended for winning the 2023 Peninsula Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization super bowl; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Smithfield Packers Youth Sports 06U Blue team as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the team's achievement.
