SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 54
Celebrating the life of the Reverend Dr. Salathiel J. Henderson.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Salathiel J. Henderson, a religious leader in Hampton who enhanced community life through his inspirational faith and dedication to service, died on November 10, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Salathiel Henderson grew up in Key West, Florida, where he graduated from Frederick Douglass High School; and

WHEREAS, after his high school graduation, Salathiel Henderson served the nation as a member of the United States Air Force for 23 years, during which time he continued his education by earning associate and bachelor's degrees from what is now Saint Leo University; and

WHEREAS, Salathiel Henderson served as the longtime president of the Ministers' Coalition for Hampton and Vicinity, and in 2010 received an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Canaan Theological Seminary in recognition of his contributions to the faith community in the region; and

WHEREAS, beginning in 2012, Salathiel Henderson served as pastor of New Beginning Faith Community Baptist Church in Wakefield for many years; he was also an active member of Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton as an associate minister and a member of the music ministry, bereavement ministry, and military ministry; and

WHEREAS, Salathiel Henderson further served his fellow residents of Hampton Roads as president of the board of directors for Hampton V.A. Federal Credit Union and a life member and chaplain of the Hampton Branch of the NAACP; and

WHEREAS, Salathiel Henderson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted wife of more than 54 years, Mary Louise; his sons Salathiel II and Shane, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Reverend Dr. Salathiel J. Henderson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Dr. Salathiel J. Henderson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
