WHEREAS, in 2011, Robert M. Stanton, founder of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Classic, a successful philanthropic event in Virginia Beach; and WHEREAS, as a prominent and successful commercial real estate developer and investor in the Hampton Roads area, Robert "Bob" Stanton has been involved in numerous high profile developments, including Lynnhaven and Greenbrier Malls, the World Trade Center, the 150 Main office building, and more than 25 grocery-anchored neighborhood shopping centers; and WHEREAS, in the winter of 1991, Bob Stanton conceived of a major fund-raising event that would combine elements of fine wine and excellent company and named it the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic; and WHEREAS, Bob Stanton and his wife, Eleanor, hosted the first Grand Auction of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic at their home in Virginia Beach and raised $11,000; the event continues to be held annually at the Stanton estate; and WHEREAS, since the first Grand Auction, the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic has expanded to include an annual Grand Tasting, celebrity dining events, and Wine, Women, and Fishing, a women-only angling tournament to benefit breast cancer research; and WHEREAS, under the guidance of Bob Stanton as chairman, the nonprofit Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation has distributed more than $3 million to charities including WHRO public television and ACCESS College Foundation, which has helped more than 70,000 students attain higher education; and WHEREAS, in addition to opening his home to the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Grand Auction each year, Bob Stanton is active with the Virginia Beach Jaycees, Annual Fund for the Eastern Virginia Medical School, Board of Trustees of Norfolk Academy, and Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Robert M. Stanton on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert M. Stanton, founder of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic, as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for his commitment to philanthropy in the Commonwealth. |
