SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 4
Celebrating the life of Douglas Junious DePriest.

WHEREAS, Douglas Junious DePriest, Ph.D., of Hampton, a respected citizen and the acting dean of the Hampton University School of Science, died on October 12, 2009; and

WHEREAS, the son of James and Octavia DePriest, Douglas Junious DePriest grew up in Richmond and Hampton; and

WHEREAS, Dr. DePriest graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Hampton University in 1966, earned a master of science degree in mathematics education from the University of Tennessee, and received a doctoral degree in statistics from American University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. DePriest returned to Hampton in 1999 and accepted an associate professor position in mathematics at Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. DePriest served as assistant dean from 2005 until 2008 when he became acting dean of the School of Science; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as acting dean, Dr. DePriest was instrumental in the growth and development of curricular, research, and service programs, as well as activities focused on increasing the number of minorities and women studying science and engineering; and

WHEREAS, the university community will miss Dr. DePriest's diligent and heartfelt work and committed service as an administrator, scientist, and mentor; he loved his students and encouraged them to work hard to realize their dreams; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Dr. DePriest touched the lives of many young people, and he received numerous accolades for his commitment to excellence in education and service to his community; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help his neighbors in need, Dr. DePriest and his family have been longtime members of the St. Paul's Baptist Church on Creighton Road and active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a wonderful father and grandfather, Dr. DePriest will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his devoted daughter, Marcia DePriest Brown, and son, Kraig DePriest, and their families, including two grandchildren, Kamile and Kallie; his many other loving family members; his fiancee, Dr. Linda Malone-Colon; and his numerous good friends and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine educator and outstanding Virginian, Douglas Junious DePriest; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Douglas Junious DePriest as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
