15105096D WHEREAS, Robert T. Marshall, a successful entrepreneur and a respected business and community leader in Danville and Pittsylvania County, died on January 28, 2015; and WHEREAS, a native of Pittsylvania County, Robert "Bobby" Marshall joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to his country during World War II in the United States Navy; he also served in the United States Army during the Korean War; and WHEREAS, Bobby Marshall learned the value of hard work and responsibility from his father, who was also a local businessman; he and his brother accepted leadership roles in the family sand business in 1945; and WHEREAS, in the 1960s, Bobby Marshall formed Marshall Sand and Gravel, which later became Marshall Construction, beginning a long and fulfilling career as an entrepreneur in the construction and real estate industries; and WHEREAS, a visionary business leader, Bobby Marshall worked to serve and strengthen the Danville and Pittsylvania County communities by encouraging and facilitating responsible growth; he was a champion for the well-being of his employees and all of his fellow community members; and WHEREAS, throughout the course of his distinguished career, Bobby Marshall owned construction and trucking companies and several restaurants; his legacy lives on in the many homes, apartment complexes, and thriving commercial sites still enjoyed by local residents; and WHEREAS, Bobby Marshall was a respected leader and a trusted mentor, who was admired as much for his business acumen as for his ability to understand the concerns of others and his delightful sense of humor; and WHEREAS, an active member of the community, Bobby Marshall joined American Legion Post 325 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 647; he enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community at Grace Design United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee; and WHEREAS, Bobby Marshall cared deeply for his family, and he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Margaret; children, Robert, Jr., and Patricia, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Robert T. Marshall, a highly respected and successful entrepreneur and a true Virginia gentleman; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert T. Marshall as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
