WHEREAS, Inova Loudoun Hospital will mark 100 years of providing outstanding medical care in 2012; and WHEREAS, due to the visionary efforts of P. Howell Lightfoot, Dr. William C. Orr, Dr. John A. Gibson, and Horace Littlejohn, Inova Loudoun Hospital opened its doors as Leesburg Hospital on June 5, 1912; its first patient was steeplechase jockey Pee Wee Rose; and WHEREAS, shortly after the opening of the hospital, a group of pioneering women formed The Ladies Board to provide vital support to the hospital, overseeing the housekeeping and maintaining equipment and supplies for the kitchen, rooms, and wards for many years; and WHEREAS, the hospital quickly outgrew its original leased brick building, which had six patient rooms and one bathroom; The Ladies Foundation raised funds to aid in the purchase of 13 acres of land on Cornwall Street; and WHEREAS, in 1913, Leesburg Hospital changed its name to Loudoun Hospital, Inc.; in 1918, a new facility opened, consisting of 26 beds, six private rooms, four wards, an operating room, a chemical laboratory, and an X-ray machine, with additional wings added over the years; and WHEREAS, in 1974, a new, three-story hospital and its 85-bed Long Term Care Unit opened, with a 100-bed Long Term Care Center opening in 1981; and WHEREAS, in 1997, the hospital moved from its Cornwall Street location to its new Lansdowne campus, which allowed additional space for private rooms, a new Birthing Inn and Women's Center, and expanded surgical and diagnostic services; and WHEREAS, in 2005, Loudoun Hospital Center merged with Inova Health System, resulting in increased financial stability and the establishment of a cardiac catheterization lab, a daVinci robotic-assisted surgical program, a breast surgery program, and a host of other services; and WHEREAS, in 2010, Inova Loudoun Hospital provided services for 10,816 inpatients, 63,677 emergency room visits, 2,705 births, and a vast range of outpatient ambulatory services; and WHEREAS, today, Inova Loudoun Hospital is a 183-bed, advanced acute-care hospital that offers a full complement of health services in a variety of specialties on two campuses, where over 1,500 people are employed; and WHEREAS, Inova Loudoun Hospital continues to give back to the community through various initiatives, wellness programs, and support of charitable organizations and remains committed to serving the diverse community through the expansion of services and locations; and WHEREAS, in July 2011, Inova Loudoun Hospital announced a two-year, $32 million redevelopment project for the Inova Loudoun Medical Campus Leesburg, which will include a new, state-of-the-art emergency department, a new outpatient laboratory, and expanded diagnostic imaging; and WHEREAS, over the past 100 years, Inova Loudoun Hospital has enjoyed the generous support of The Ladies Board and thoughtful community members as it has worked to meet the health care needs of the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Inova Loudoun Hospital on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Inova Loudoun Hospital as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and gratitude for the hospital's commitment to medical excellence and outstanding patient care. |
