SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 229
Celebrating the life of JoAnne M. Jorgenson.

WHEREAS, JoAnne M. Jorgenson, who ably served the citizens of Fairfax County during her 38-year tenure at the Fairfax County Health Department, died on January 9, 2010, after losing her battle with cancer; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson, became the assistant director of nursing, director of patient care services, and finally, the deputy director for health services for the Fairfax County Health Department; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was honored as the 2009 Fairfax County Nurse of the Year and the 2009 Virginia Nurse of the Year; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was a leader in the public health community, diligently and earnestly promoting local and regional efforts to protect the health and improve the quality of life for all citizens, including among many other groups, the Northern Virginia HIV Consortium, which was formed in 1988 before any other HIV Consortium was formed in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was recognized statewide as an innovator in the field of public health nursing; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson worked tirelessly and effectively to bring primary care to uninsured families and individuals through Fairfax County's Community Health Care Network and to build and maintain the health care safety net in Fairfax County; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson was a founding member of the Northern Virginia Access to Health Care Consortium; she promoted the original idea to ensure that the initial meeting was held in 1996; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson instituted the Strategic Planning and Total Quality Improvement programs to enhance the Health Department's ability to meet the community's growing and changing health care needs; and

WHEREAS, JoAnne Jorgenson provided invaluable assistance to the community, generously lending her support, understanding, experience, balanced perspective, and wise counsel; and

WHEREAS, a large number of public health professionals consider JoAnne Jorgenson to be their mentor; she was instrumental in shaping their own commitment to service in public health today; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired and dedicated nurse and public health care leader, JoAnne M. Jorgenson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of JoAnne M. Jorgenson as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her service to the citizens of Fairfax County and her contributions to the public health of the Commonwealth.
