WHEREAS, the Town of Tazewell lost not only its mayor but also one of its most admired citizens when Charles Curtis Grindstaff died on December 2, 2011; and WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia, Charles Grindstaff grew up in Bishop, Virginia, graduating from Tazewell High School and earning a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University, master's degree from Radford University, and doctorate from Nova Southeastern University; and WHEREAS, a beloved educator, coach, and administrator in Tazewell County Public Schools, Charles Grindstaff worked to ensure a positive learning environment in which all students could excel in their endeavors; and WHEREAS, Charles Grindstaff continued to teach after retiring from Tazewell County Public Schools, sharing his insight and experiences with future educators as a professor in the department of education at Concord University; and WHEREAS, committed to the well-being and prosperity of his community, Charles Grindstaff had served on the town council of the Town of Tazewell for nearly 15 years and was in his third year as mayor at the time of his passing; and WHEREAS, Charles Grindstaff took great pride in the Town of Tazewell and its residents and spent countless hours studying issues, responding to constituent concerns, and attending town functions; and WHEREAS, Charles Grindstaff spent his last hours in the company of his fellow residents, proudly introducing the grand marshals for the annual Christmas parade, helping light the town Christmas tree, and then attending a Tazewell High School basketball game; and WHEREAS, a popular figure in the community, Charles Grindstaff performed in local theatre and shared his musical talents with others; and WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Charles Grindstaff will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Suzanne; children, Christina, Heather, and Andy, and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and the residents of the Town of Tazewell; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved educator and the mayor of the Town of Tazewell, Charles Curtis Grindstaff; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charles Curtis Grindstaff as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
