SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 180
Commending Marumsco Hills Elementary School.

WHEREAS, in 2016, Marumsco Hills Elementary School in Woodbridge celebrates 50 years of providing students with a world-class education in a fun, safe, and supportive learning environment; and

WHEREAS, Marumsco Hills Elementary School was built on land deeded by Cecil and Irene Hylton and took its name from the local community; the school opened for its first full year in 1966 and served students in first grade through sixth grade; and

WHEREAS, the student body of Marumsco Hills Elementary School continued to grow through the 1960s along with the population of Prince William County, and a six-room addition was completed in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Marumsco Hills Elementary School had grown to serve more than 700 students by the 1970s and completed additional renovations in the 1980s and 2000s to add more classrooms, a new gym, and a library expansion; and

WHEREAS, Marumsco Hills Elementary School introduced full-day kindergarten during the 2006–2007 school year, and kindergarten enrollment reached 121 students by September 2015; and

WHEREAS, by January 2016, Marumsco Hills Elementary School had a total enrollment of nearly 800 students, representing numerous backgrounds and cultures with different home languages, including Spanish, English, Dari, Arabic, Urdu, and Twi; and

WHEREAS, Marumsco Hills Elementary School has earned seven School of Excellence Awards, the highest award of the Prince William County School Board, and has maintained full accreditation since 2002; and

WHEREAS, Marumsco Hills Elementary School has been ably led by seven principals in its history, and has succeeded in its mission to help students achieve their fullest potential through the hard work of every member of the faculty, staff, and administration; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Marumsco Hills Elementary School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Meisram Hernandez, principal of Marumsco Hills Elementary School, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the school's commitment to serving the youth of the Woodbridge community.
