WHEREAS, Patricia Elizabeth Clifton Harwood, Ph.D., a trailblazing education administrator and an active and beloved member of the Richmond community, died on December 13, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood earned bachelor's degrees in French and English and a certification in secondary education in 1967 from what is today Longwood University, followed by a master's degree in psychology with a counseling certification from Middle Tennessee State University in 1970 and a doctoral degree in higher education administration with a counseling minor from The College of William and Mary in 1976; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood embarked upon her illustrious education career as a teacher of French and English at Donelson High School in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1967 to 1971, where she contributed greatly to her students' success; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood subsequently served as director of career planning and placement from 1971 to 1978 at Paul D. Camp Community College and then as dean of student services at the North Carolina School of the Arts from 1978 to 1985; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood served as dean of Westhampton College at the University of Richmond from 1985 to 2000, fulfilling a longstanding goal to educate and inspire young women to overcome barriers and achieve their dreams; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood advanced her field through leadership roles with professional organizations, such as the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Southern Association of College Student Affairs, which she served as president, and through many presentations and articles over the years; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood was notably the first woman member of the Rotary Club of West Richmond, and she would later be named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International and receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Board of Trustees of the University of Richmond in recognition of her contributions to the community; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout her life by her faith, Patricia Harwood enjoyed worship and fellowship with her community at River Road Church, Baptist in Richmond, where she served as chair of the board of administration and as a member on various committees; and
WHEREAS, Patricia Harwood will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her loving husband, Richard; her stepchildren, Robert, Katherine, and Elizabeth, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Patricia Elizabeth Clifton Harwood, Ph.D., a cherished member of the Richmond community who made a profound and lasting impact on countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Patricia Harwood as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
