WHEREAS, William F. Mezger, the longtime chief economist of the Virginia Employment Commission, retired in December 2009 after 47 years of dedicated service to the Commonwealth and his fellow citizens; and WHEREAS, a Richmond native, William Mezger grew up in Church Hill, graduated from John Marshall High School in downtown Richmond in 1958, and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Richmond in 1962; and WHEREAS, soon after graduation, William Mezger joined the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) as an analyst; and WHEREAS, a hardworking and vastly knowledgeable state economist for 47 years, William Mezger has been the chief economist of the Economic Information Services Division of the VEC for 37 years; and WHEREAS, William Mezger has been the familiar source and authoritative voice of the VEC's announcement of the state's monthly unemployment rate, analysis, and forecast; he issued his final report of Virginia's unemployment figures on his last official day with the VEC on December 30, 2009; and WHEREAS, a visionary leader and a respected and admired member of his profession, William Mezger has been a great mentor to his colleagues and a tireless advocate and spokesperson for the VEC; and WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career, William Mezger has been committed to the prosperity and well-being of the Commonwealth and supportive of sound economic and employment policies and practices that benefit all Virginians; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend William F. Mezger on his many years of exemplary leadership as chief economist of the Virginia Employment Commission and his outstanding service to the Commonwealth and his fellow citizens; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to William F. Mezger as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for his numerous achievements and best wishes for success in all of his future endeavors. |
