HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 98
Celebrating the life of Stella Mae Smith Lowe.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 11, 2013

WHEREAS, Stella Mae Smith Lowe, devoted grandmother and dynamic community member, died on November 19, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Stella Lowe was raised in Jonesville, where she met a Civilian Conservation Corps worker, Homer J. Lowe, who would later become her husband in 1938; and

WHEREAS, the couple moved to Vansant and worked together at the Piggly Wiggly before relocating several times from the rustic small towns of Southwest Virginia to the relative bustle of Roanoke and Fredericksburg to follow Homer Lowe's career as a People's Life insurance agent; and

WHEREAS, Stella Lowe left a profound impact on each of the communities through which she passed, maintaining her membership in the United Methodist Women, an organization dedicated to faith, fellowship, and encouraging leadership in girls and women; and

WHEREAS, Stella Lowe expressed as much devotion to her neighbors through missionary outreach as she showed to her family by being an ardent homemaker and a caring mother; and

WHEREAS, following the death of her husband in 1987, Stella Lowe moved to Abingdon, where she continued her involvement with the United Methodist Church, was a member of the Washington County Republican Party, and also focused on her two grandsons, Matthew and Steven; and

WHEREAS, Stella Lowe, predeceased by her husband, Homer J. Lowe, touched the lives of many people and will be fondly remembered by her children, A. Jackson Lowe and C. Randall Lowe, and their families; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Stella Mae Smith Lowe, an exemplary member of several Virginia communities; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Stella Mae Smith Lowe as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
