Celebrating the life of Judith Woolsey Ryan Azzara.

WHEREAS, Judith Woolsey Ryan Azzara, the longtime principal of Louise Archer Elementary School in Vienna, who inspired generations of students to become lifelong learners, died on April 11, 2018; and

WHEREAS, a native of Alexandria, Judith Azzara graduated from Bishop O'Connell High School and earned a bachelor's degree from St. Francis College and a master's degree from George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, Judith Azzara joined Fairfax County Public Schools in 1970 as a fourth-grade teacher at Mosby Woods Elementary School; she subsequently served as assistant principal of Laurel Ridge Elementary School from 1974 to 1976, when she became principal of Louise Archer Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, during her 24-year tenure as principal of Louise Archer Elementary School, Judith Azzara built strong, personal relationships with students and was a trusted mentor and friend to the faculty and staff of the school, and her legacy lives on through the school's tradition of excellence; and

WHEREAS, after her well-earned retirement in 2000, Judith Azzara helped recruit, interview, and develop teachers for Fairfax County Public Schools and James Madison University, and she was a regular contributor to education-related publications; and

WHEREAS, Judith Azzara received many awards and accolades for her work, including multiple principal of the year nominations, the 1996 distinguished alumna award from St. Francis College, and the 2000 Educator of the Year award from the Vienna branch of the American Association of University Women; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her first husband, William, and her second husband, Carl, Judith Azzara will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her son, Michael, and his family, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Judith Woolsey Ryan Azzara; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Judith Woolsey Ryan Azzara as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
