HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 584
Commending Martin Joseph Barrington.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, May 30, 2018

WHEREAS, Martin Joseph Barrington, the respected chairman, chief executive officer, and president of Altria Group, Inc., has served the company for 25 years and was honored by the Richmond Times-Dispatch as one of the Richmond community's most influential business leaders of the last three decades; and

WHEREAS, born in New York, Martin "Marty" Joseph Barrington earned a bachelor's degree from The College of the Saint Rose in Albany and a law degree from Albany Law School; during his early career, he worked in both the public sector and at the Hunton & Williams law firm in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Marty Barrington joined the Altria Group, Inc., in 1993 and later held a variety of executive and legal roles, including serving as the company's vice chairman, executive vice president, and chief administrative officer; he has also served as general counsel and senior vice president of Philip Morris USA; and

WHEREAS, since 2012, Marty Barrington has been the chairman and chief executive officer of Altria Group, Inc.; he became the company's president in 2015; and

WHEREAS, with Marty Barrington at the helm, Altria Group, Inc., has developed new and innovative products and remained one of Richmond's largest employers and most influential corporate entities; and

WHEREAS, Marty Barrington has led Altria Group, Inc., in its continued support of the Richmond community through its sponsorship of the 2015 UCI Road World Championships in Richmond and the Altria Theater as well as its financial contributions to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his leadership role at Altria Group, Inc., Marty Barrington serves on the board of Anheuser-Busch InBev and gives back to the community as a member of the board of trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the board of directors of the Richmond Performing Arts Center, and the board of managers for the nonprofit organization NextUp RVA; and

WHEREAS, in 2016, the Richmond Times-Dispatch selected Marty Barrington as one of several business leaders, companies, and projects that have helped shape the City of Richmond over its last 30 years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Martin Joseph Barrington hereby be commended for his many contributions to Altria Group, Inc., and the Richmond community and on his selection as one of Richmond's most influential business leaders; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Martin Joseph Barrington as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his impressive accomplishments.
