WHEREAS, Walter D. Brown III admirably served the citizens of Southampton County as a dedicated member of the Board of Supervisors from 2004 to 2011; and WHEREAS, Walter "Walt" D. Brown III spent his professional career in the United States Army before returning to his native Southampton County, where he serves as the first modern-day chief of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian tribe; and WHEREAS, Walt Brown traveled throughout the world during his 23 years of military service; he was posted to Okinawa, Japan, with responsibility for munitions transportation and storage; he later was transferred to the Army Logistics Center at Fort Lee, and he also served as a military recruiter in Detroit and in Columbia, South Carolina; and WHEREAS, Walt Brown rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and received many decorations, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters; and WHEREAS, in Walt Brown's nearly quarter-century of active duty, he was assigned to a logistics agency in Pennsylvania; during Operation Desert Storm, he worked in the operations division of the European Command in Stuttgart, Germany; and WHEREAS, as an Army project manager for a nuclear forces reduction effort, Walt Brown played a key role in the drawdown of 29 nuclear munitions storage sites, with no security breaches or safety violations, and the successful coding and transportation of more than 3,500 nuclear weapons; and WHEREAS, upon returning home, after many years of working around the globe, Walt Brown recognized the value of increasing economic opportunities for the people of his rural county; he promoted the construction of an industrial park to help increase employment in Southampton County; and WHEREAS, a tireless supporter of public education, Walt Brown diligently fulfilled his commitment to serve the people of Southampton County; during his tenure on the board of supervisors, three new elementary schools were built: Meherrin, Nottoway, and Riverdale Elementary Schools; and WHEREAS, Walt Brown, who received his bachelor's and master's degrees while in the United States Army, demonstrated his commitment to public education by opting not to receive a county salary in 2010, directing that it go to the Southampton County Public Schools; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his many contributions to local government, Walt Brown was honored with a Resolution of Appreciation by the Southampton County Board of Supervisors; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Walter D. Brown III, a selfless public servant, a strong advocate of education, and a proud veteran, hereby be commended; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Walter D. Brown III as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect and appreciation for his worthwhile and valued service on behalf of Southampton County, the Commonwealth, and the nation. |
