WHEREAS, The Cavalier Daily, the University of Virginia's independent student-led newspaper, has greatly served the university's community and the community of Charlottesville since its founding in 1890; and
WHEREAS, founded under the name College Topics, The Cavalier Daily is the Commonwealth's oldest collegiate daily and the oldest daily newspaper in Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, The Cavalier Daily has been the only daily newspaper at the University of Virginia since 1996 and today has a print circulation of 7,500 copies that are distributed on the university's grounds and throughout Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, The Cavalier Daily provides a vital service to the community by keeping its readers informed of news and events of interest to students and other members of the university's community; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of The Cavalier Daily have been made possible by the tireless efforts of the thousands of students who have staffed the paper over its history; and
WHEREAS, many student journalists with The Cavalier Daily have gone on to enjoy noteworthy careers at leading news publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Associated Press; and
WHEREAS, The Cavalier Daily has been honored with numerous awards over the years in recognition of its exemplary news writing, editorial writing, feature writing, and overall design; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That The Cavalier Daily hereby be commended for its legacy of service; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to The Cavalier Daily as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the publication's contributions to Charlottesville and the Commonwealth.
