HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 311 Offered March 4, 2024 Celebrating the life of Lonnie Chandell Reavis. ---------- Patron-- Jones ----------

WHEREAS, Lonnie Chandell Reavis, a beloved son and husband and a respected educator, died on November 4, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis graduated a year early from Stuttgart International High School in 1986, then matriculated at Norfolk State University, where he joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in criminal justice; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis subsequently graduated from what is now Longwood University with a master's degree in education administration and supervision in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis started the Franklin-Southampton (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, where he was known to his brothers as "Serge," or affectionately called "Face"; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis began his teaching career at Courtland Elementary School, where he taught fifth grade and was a middle school drop-out prevention specialist; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis provided his expertise to the Virginia Association for Pupil Transportation, climbing through the ranks to become regional director from 2010 to 2013 and vice president from 2013 to 2014; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his career, Lonnie Reavis also served as a sixth-grade math and science teacher at John F. Kennedy Middle School, where he started a black male youth mentoring program; he later became an assistant principal at John Yeates Middle School, then began focusing on student transportation; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis accepted an opportunity to drive the yellow school buses that he was so fond of during a short stint in Northern Virginia at Loudoun County Public Schools in 2015 and then at Fairfax County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his work in education, Lonnie Reavis honorably served the nation as a member of the United States Navy Reserve; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis had a contagious smile, was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, and also enjoyed golf, billiards, and fishing; and

WHEREAS, Lonnie Reavis will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Lonnie Chandell Reavis, a well-regarded educator and bus driver who served communities across the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lonnie Chandell Reavis as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
