WHEREAS, the Freedom High School football team of Woodbridge won the Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship on December 9, 2023, at the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Freedom High School Eagles defeated the Highland Springs High School Springers by a score of 42–34 to bring home the program's second consecutive state championship title and to finish the season with a perfect 14–0 record; and
WHEREAS, after seeing a significant lead cut to 35–27 toward the end of the third quarter, the Freedom Eagles turned a fourth-and-1 situation on the ensuing possession into a 49-yard rushing touchdown that all but sealed their victory; and
WHEREAS, the Freedom Eagles saw impressive play on both sides of the ball during the contest, including 264 yards and two rushing touchdowns from Jeff Overton, Jr., 74 yards and two touchdowns from Kam Courtney, and an interception and touchdown from Jachai Hughes; and
WHEREAS, the Freedom Eagles are the first Prince William County high school football program to claim back-to-back state titles since C.D. Hylton High School accomplished the feat in 1998 and 1999; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Freedom Eagles is the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of their coaches and teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire Freedom High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Freedom High School football team hereby be commended for winning the 2023 Virginia High School League Class 6 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Darryl Overton, coach of the Freedom High School football team, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the team's achievement.
