HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 237
Commending the JK Community Farm.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2024
 

WHEREAS, JK Community Farm, a nonprofit farm in Purcellville dedicated to providing food education and alleviating food insecurity with nutrient dense produce and protein, celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2023; and

WHEREAS, founded in 2018 with a vision for revitalizing the food system and helping food insecure individuals and families in Loudoun, Fairfax, and Arlington Counties and Washington, D.C., access healthy and nutritious food; and

WHEREAS, the JK Community Farm grows over 50 varieties of vegetables, fruits, protein, and herbs and donates its yield to local food pantries in partnership with Loudoun Hunger Relief, Food for Others, Arlington Food Assistance Center, and DC Central Kitchen; and

WHEREAS, JK Community Farm offers educational programs in alignment with the Virginia standards of learning where students and families can visit the farm to learn more about nutrition and agriculture first-hand; and

WHEREAS, JK Community Farm is one of the largest chemical-free nonprofit farms in the country that donates 100 percent of its yield, establishing a model that has the potential to transform the way countless people approach food and nutrition; and

WHEREAS, in its fifth year in operation, JK Community Farm marked another significant milestone by donating its one-millionth pound of food; and

WHEREAS, the JK Community Farm hosts an annual Plant-A-Thon fundraiser where volunteers plant nearly 30,000 seedlings, which will ultimately support upwards of 100,000 meals; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of JK Community Farm are the result of the leadership and dedication of its staff, the generous support of its donors, and the tireless efforts of the thousands of volunteers that support the farm annually; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That JK Community Farm hereby be commended on the occasion of its fifth anniversary and its one-millionth pound of food donated; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the JK Community Farm as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's mission and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
