WHEREAS, the Oakton High School girls' basketball team continued to demonstrate athletic excellence by winning the 2015 - 2016 Virginia High School League Group 6A North region title for the second year in a row and advancing to the state tournament; and WHEREAS, the Oakton High School Cougars defeated a talented team from Fairfax High School 46 - 36 to claim the Group 6A North region championship at the tournament, which was held on February 27, 2016, at Robinson Secondary School; and WHEREAS, the team from Oakton High School in Fairfax County led 20 - 11 at halftime, yet went scoreless for the entire third quarter and was behind when the fourth quarter began; and WHEREAS, a pep talk from head coach Fred Priester and the athletes' determination to win spurred the Cougars to outscore their opponent 26 - 13 in the fourth quarter to win the North region championship by 10 points; and WHEREAS, Maddie Royle led all scorers with 20 points and was named the tournament's most valuable player; other high-scoring Oakton High School players were Delaney Connolly, who made 12 points, and Kailyn Fee, with 10 points; and WHEREAS, the Oakton High School girls' basketball team advanced to the Virginia High School League state tournament and finished the season with a 29 - 1 record; throughout the season, the team was greatly supported by the coaching staff and their families, friends, and the school community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Oakton High School girls' basketball team hereby be commended for winning the 2015 - 2016 Virginia High School League Group 6A North region title for the second year in a row and advancing to the semi-finals of the state tournament; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fred Priester, head coach of the Oakton High School girls' basketball team, as an expression of the House of Delegates' congratulations and admiration for the team's outstanding performance and championship season. |
