HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 163 Commending Malcolm Anthony Shaw.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 15, 2013

WHEREAS, Malcolm Anthony Shaw, a courageous veteran, dedicated former postal worker, and energetic member of the Roanoke community, celebrated his 100th birthday on January 8, 2013; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of the City of Roanoke, Malcolm Shaw was born in 1913 to Anthony and Mary Shaw and graduated from Lucy Addison High School in 1932; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Shaw met the love of his life, a Broadway performer named Ena McCormack, in New York City, but their romance was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Malcolm Shaw traveled the country helping sell war bonds as a member of the 184th Field Artillery Battalion; the unit was later retrained in the disposal of unexploded ordnance and was deployed to Europe; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable discharge in 1945, Malcolm Shaw returned home to Roanoke, then reunited with and married Ena McCormack in 1947; the couple raised two beloved sons, Bobby and George, in a house that Malcolm Shaw built himself in 1950; and

WHEREAS, many of Malcolm Shaw's happiest memories involve the trips he and his family took during the 1960s to Ena Shaw's home country of Jamaica and to the World's Fair in New York City; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Shaw took a job with the United States Postal Service in 1962 and diligently served the Roanoke community as a mail carrier and truck driver until his well-deserved retirement in 1980; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his beloved wife, Ena, in 2002, Malcolm Shaw still treasures the close company of his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, having first attended church as a child, Malcolm Shaw still enjoys faith and fellowship with the community at Saint Paul United Methodist Church and has loyally served as its treasurer for over 35 years; and

WHEREAS, Malcolm Shaw celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends at a festive party in Saint Paul United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, an inspiration to the Roanoke community, Malcolm Shaw continues to offer his wisdom, experience, and bright smile to friends and fellow residents; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Malcolm Anthony Shaw, a respected veteran, dedicated public servant, and active member of the Roanoke community, hereby be commended on the occasion of his 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Malcolm Anthony Shaw as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his century of commitment to the Roanoke community and best wishes for future health and happiness.
